- AbstractThe alterations of some physico-chemical and biotic factors of spruce forests polluted by SO2 during the last 30 years were investigated (industrial region of Upper Stiria, Mürztal). The pH values were shifted towards more acid reactions (1 - 1.5 pH Units) in all the investigated horizons. Surprisingly, the buffer capacity turned to higher values, only the uppermost layer of the soll remains unaltered in this respect. This phenomenom is explained by mobilization of inorganic ions due to the acid immissions, it seems to be confirmed by a corresponding increase of electric conductance of the soll extracts. Soluble sulphates in the soils have only minor importance to the conductivity. Some soll enzymes investigated are altered by the acid immissions (catalase, dehydrogenase), they seem to be inactivated mainly in the lower soll horizons, while the endoenzymes investigated show minor activity mainly in the Upper layers (O - horizon). Both the respiration of the soil and the decomposition of cellulose show a drastic decrease in the polluted soils. When caused by immissions the spruce forest broke down brushwood grew up spontaneously, enabling the soil to regenerate towards the values of the controls, even under the influence of immissions.
