The height and age of dominat trees are used to evaluate the site index of a forest stand. These factors, height and age, are good indicators of the fertility of the site, however unpredictable factors such as insects may considerably affect the height of trees and therefore the site index. This is discussed using as an example balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) by a study of the time required for trees to grow 1 m in height.
