The fact that damaging substances may accumulate in needles has been used for the diagnosis of the effect of air pollutants on forest trees for 120 years. The results of the chemical needle analysis, however, can only give an indication of the effect but not of the actual damage (loss of increment). The effort to establish a functional correlation between the contents of damaging substances and the damage temporarily discredited the chemical needle analysis as a method of diagnosis, The damage to the tree can be determinated only by means of surveys on the loss of increment, This paper will deal with the contents of S, F and Cl in needles from regions with and without air pollutants, the factors influencing the accumulation of S, F and Cl in needles and the possibilities for the application of the needle analysis as a method of diagnosis.
