Abstract
Variation of Eucalyptus microtheca was investigated in 20 'provenance groups' formed by bulking seed from 70 provenances (291 trees) representing most of the range of the species. Variation is particularly significant with regard to oil gland density of juvenile foliage and lignotuber percent of nursery stock. Clinal variation along latitudinal, longtudinal and altitudinal gradients is displayed several of the traits measured. Patterns of variation studied by factor and cluster analysis display many irregularities that could be related to the history of the species and/or the effect of buling of the seed. The possibility is pointed out that introgression by E. cyanoclada may occur in the Newcastle Waters, N.T., area.
