  • Abstract
Due to adverse weather and snow conditions, as well as a limited extent of available manpower, avalanche test sites in the Alps are often not accessible on a regular basis during the winter, thus precluding continuous monitoring at these locations. However, for a variety of applications, a high temporal resolution of data from these test sites is required or advantageous. Mobile communication networks nowadays offer the possibility to install, remotely run and control observations, thus enabling the collection of data without being physically present at the test site. Over the past several years, the BFW has installed remotely controlled data acquisition systems, recording different parameters at several test sites in the Alps. In this paper, a field report on the technical implementation of a remotely controlled Automated Terrestrial Laser Scanner (ATLS), at a test site in Arlberg - Lech/Mohnenfluh (Western Austria) will be provided. This report discusses the experiences gained during the last winter seasons. It highlights issues regarding the test site setup and instrumentation, as well as the successful acquisition of ATLS data, providing details on the encountered difficulties (e.g. regarding communication problems, weather conditions and power supply).Automated Terrestrial Laser Scanner, remote control, avalanche, snowcatcher
