Abstract
Norway spruce ist the economically most important tree species in Austria stocking on 54 % of Austrian forest and summing up to 66 % of the total annual explitation. Its natural distribution in Austria ranges from elevations of approximately 600 m upt to 1500 m. Since the analyzed trial is growing on a site with extreme climate conditons it shows significant growth reduction in years with limited water availability. X-ray analysis showd that high variation in drought reaction exists among the various provenances. This variation can be used for further provenance selection and for the compilation of collectives with drought-sensitive and drought-"resistant" trees for further genomic analysis. Furthermore, significant variaton for economically importatn wood characters (wood density) was found.
