The historical development of forest site classification and yield determination in North America is traced from its roots in European forestry to the present. The discussion describes the evolution of both the philosophy and the technology of yield prediction and site classification, primarily over the last century. Ultimately, differences in approaches and emphasis between the Europeans and the North Americans may reflect the European foresters' abundance of long-term growth and management information in contrast to the American foresters' relative lack of information and management experience.
