1. The sturcture of the thickets. The number of stems is only little influenced by the quality of the site.The progressive diminution depends entirely on the environment, the treatment and the game. Ant the tage of thicket, the ash is always mixed with a great number of hardwoods, except in plots not fenced in. The stratification and the social position of the ash varies according to the proportion of mixture. The most suitable mixture comprises 50 to 75% of ash; above and below this optimum, the relative number of dominant ashes diminishes: The composition of the thickets (distribution within the age- and hight-classes) varies with the environment and the treatment. 2. The growth and the increment. The growth of the ashes is slowed down in the plots not fenced in or having had an insufficient treatment, under the lateral influence of an old stand and in the thicktes of the mixed type ash-maple. In all these cases, it is the diameter-growth which diminshes most. 3. The quality of the thickets. The development of the ash-thickets is characterized by a progressive diminutiion of the general quality and by the marked reduction of the absolute number of the first class stems, th damages caused by game being the most frequent cause of it in groups not fenced in; in other places breakages, formations of bends and forks occur. However, the development of the quality is strongly influenced a) by the treatment, b) by the degree of mixture, c) by the lateral influence.
