  • Abstract
This investigation of the plnt communities of Swiss river flood plains encompasses the following regions: Jura mountains, Plateau, the northern alpine valleys and the middle part of the Rhone valley. Hydrographic and topographic conditions of the flood plains are described only in so far as they are necessary for the understanding of the plant communities. The longitudinal profile of a river is divided into four sections: source, upper, middle, and lower section of the river course; in the cross section are distinguished river bed, flood plain an terrace. The systematic relationship and the characteristic species are listed in the tables on pages 230-236. Thrity four associations, represented by 435 plots, are described, viz. three associations of the Epilpbion fleicheri, two associations of the Bidention tripartitae and one of the Nanocyperion; three associations of the Agropyro-Rumicion and three of the Artemisietea, one association of the Phragmition and five associations of the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea; four associations of the newly described order Salicetalia purpureae, five associations of the Berberidion, two associations of the gray alder, three ash associations, five sub-associations of the Querco-Carpinetum; the Carici elongatae-Alnetum and the Pyrolo-Pinetum. The description contain both information regarding the assoations'* systematic position and data concerning floristic and structural composition, physiognomy and habitat. Three more chapters deal with habitat, with zonation of the communities along longitudinal profile and cross section of a rier, and finally with succession and superposition af habitats (summarized in the figures 4 to 14 and in the table on page 351).
