Abstract
Reforestation in the upper forested zone of the Alps is difficult, frequently extremely problematical. In order to study the problems of reforestation and avalanche protection, an experimental area, 10 hectares in size, was established by the Swiss Forest Research Institute and the federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche research in an avalanche starting zone at Stillberg (Dischma valley, Davos). There detailed investigations are in progress into the limitations of tree life by environmental factors, the behaviour ofthe tree species in critical phases of their lives, the factors which determine the natural upper forest cultures. The Purpose of these investigations is to formulate instructions for the practising forester which permit him to plan and effect reforestation in the upper tree limit zone with acceptable risk and economic utilization af labour, material, tools, and plants. This paper presents the initial results from the Stillberg seeding and planting experiments and from investigations into natural regeneration within the framework of the research programme. The necessasry definition of terms, as far as they concern altitudinal zones of vegetation, stages of tree life, the structure and formation types of tree.regeneration (both solitary and clustered regeneration), are compiled in 6 tables (chapter 2). A surveyof the natural plant communities, the present state of vegetation above and below the upper forest limit, specifically the forest, pre-forest (seral scrub) and open land communities, is presented in chapter 3 and 4 and projected in table 7. A clear understanding of the interrelations between distribution, structure und restorations programmes.
