The feasibility of delineating slope facets and solar climates in a mountainous area is illustrated. The exposure of terrain elements to direct solar radiation is described in terms of a "radiation index"--the percent of normal beam irradiation available to receiving surfaces. Opportunities to test or apply the index are numerous in ecology, land and forest site classification, and in heat- and water-budget investigations.
