Abstract
Teak has been introduced in Brazil, on a commercial basis, in 1971. As a private timber producer and exporter, Cáceres Florestal first started planting teak to assure its future and sustainable wood supply. Intensive management and mechanization, combined with good site conditions, led to a 25-year rotation. Besides growth rates, success was confirmed with the form of the trees and its wood quality. Remunerative prices were obtained with the export of thinned-out logs. In 1989, Cáceres Florestal started publishing its results. Since then, a growing number of farmers and small landholders, wood merchants and investors have become interested in this attractive investment. Nowadays, the total area planted in Brazilian territory covers more than 10,000 hectares. The Country’s overall forest situation, great land availability and internal market potential may turn Brazil into an important teak producer.
