Abstract
Field and laboratory experiments on storage discolouration of spruce-wood and the factors responsible have been carried out over several years in southern Germany. In three growth sites ("Bayerisches Territäres Hügelland", "Bayerisches Voralpengebiet" and "Oberschwäbisches Fichtengebiet") about 300 spruce logs, with and without bark, were stored in ten different sites in the forest and converted after certain storage periods. The amount of deterioration was determined by grading the planks and by measurement. In addition it was attempted to obtain a general survey of the fungal flora which colonize stored wood under varied conditions. Periodical tests on spore dispersal during the year were carried out. The fungal species obtained were isolated and, as far as possible, identified. Further infection tests were conducted on sound wood with fungal strains, isolated from the stored wood. Also methods of attack and intensity of decay by the different fungal species, as well as their influence on the strength of timber were measured in laboratory tests. Finally the behaviour of restrain fungi on blue-stained wood was investigated, and also the degradation of redstained wood by subsequent attack of wood-destroying fungi. The effect of redstaining on the treatability has also been considered.
