Abstract
Captures of the winter moth (Operophtera bvumaia (L.)) in light- and suction-traps in Berkshire are described for 1965-66, 1966-67, 1967-68. The suction-trap caught many more moths than the light-trap. Reasons for the difference between the traps are suggested. The temperature threshold for flight lies between 5.0 and 5.5°C. The effect of temperature on the activity of the moth is described. Rainfall appears to have little effect on activity. The longevity of the male after capture in the suctiontrap is calculated from laboratory experiments. Mean length of life under the conditions described was 7.5 days. Diurnal periodicity of flight of the male is described and the biological significance of the flight pattern discussed in relation to reproductive behaviour. The reaction of the moth to changes in light conditions is recorded. This and the flight periodicity enable the moths to avoid predators during the daytime. The behaviour of O. brumata is compared with that of other related species of moth.
