  • Abstract
Curriculum development is still an important topic and is even of increasing importance as can be observed since the 1998 IUFRO Group 6.15-00 meeting at the Faculty of Forest Sciences at the Faculty of Forest Sciences of the University of Freiburg. Halfway the Bologna Process in Europe (declaration 1999; implementation before 2010) manifold discussion on the structure and content of forestry education curricula - the subject of these proceedings "Modern forestry curricula - response to changes in the field of profession" - are leading to a great number of new or revised curricula at MSc and BSc level. It is of outmost importance to take advantage of this external impetus to modernise the learning and teaching processes at forestry education institutions. Designing and improving the learning and teaching processes should consider structural aspects too, as the structures allow or demand the use of certain learning/teaching methods. As the cardinal issues for renewing from a didactical point of view are learner-centered approach and self-directed learning, the challenge is to bend the minds of curricula developers (teachers and learners) to this way of thinking and to use the renewed curricula structures to realise these two issues. A variety of approaches, views and (partial) solutions referring to these changes in teaching philosophy - from many parts of the world - have been presented during the first meeting of the IUFRO Education Group. These presentations resulted in inspiring discussions among the approximately 50 participants from various countries all over the world.
