The main objective of the COST Action E 44 "Wood Processing Strategies" is to increase the knowledge required to create a wood processing strategy in Europe. A wood processing strategy defines the options and decisions related to forestry and wood industry in order to match the goals and requirements of both. This COST Action will stimulate and co-ordinate information necessary for the development of a European processing strategy. This strategy is envisaged as being developed under 4 topics or themes: - Wood as a renewable resource, - Broad spectrum utilization of wood, - New perspectives for wood utilisation, - End use related properties of wood products. After a first workshop on "wood as a renewable resource" at Växjö-University/Sweden in autumn 2004, the current conference at BOKU University, Vienna, focuses on "broad spectrum utilisation of wood". The primary conversion process comprises 3 main technologies that are directly linked to tree quality: milling for solid timber, chipping into particles, peeling or slicing for veneers. Integrated processing for forest products can use different strategies to combine primary wood conversion processes. New options for the utilisation of mixed stand and even mixed species processing will become essential. In three sessions and an additional poster session the following topics will be covered by the conference: - Tree quality and processing, - Economic and Consumer Parameters, - Species and Applications.
