The xerothermic grass communities of Central Europe contain mostly continental species whose characteric representatives are the feathergrasses (genus Stipa). Of the fifteen Central-European Stipa species, the most frequent species of importance in typifying the steppe communities were chosen for detailed autecological analysis. They are as follows: Stipa joannis Celak., S. stenophylla Cern. )= S. tirsa Stev. emend. Celak.), S. pulcherrima C. Koch, S. dasyphylla Cern., and S. capillata L.
