Abstract
European forest management has developed since the early 19th century, particularly in terms of the protection of forests and sustainable wood production. The last decades have, however, dramatically changed the prerequisites for forest management in Europe, mainly due to the observed and anticipated environmental changes, and a changing socio-economic context. This renewed situation for a sustainable use of Europe's fores demands scientific knowledge that is considerably enlarged and broadened. An international symposium titled "Towards the Sustainable Use of Europe's Forests - Forest Ecosystem and Landscape Research: Scientific Challenges and Opportunities" was organised in Tours, France on 25-27 June 2003 to discuss and support the preparation of a European Network of Excellence focused on sustainable forest management and to provide a scientific forum on forest ecosystem and landscape research. These proceedings compile the presentations of the symposium.
