The concentration of elements in annual rings from spruceand pine during the period 1890 to 1986 is presented. The data are based on sa mples from one stem disc of each species. No variation in element concentrationin annual rings can be attributed to change in the chemical environment due to increased acid precipitation. The concentrations of Ba, Ca, Mg, Mn, Sr and Zn generally decrease from old to young wood. However, almost all elements, especially the biologically important ones, increase in concentration in the youngestsapwood.
