As a background to the discussion at the international workshop "Forests and Forestry in Central and Eastern European Countries - The Transition Process and Challenges Ahead", held in Debe on 12-14 September 2001, and as a contribution to the UNECE/FAO Team of Specialists on Countries in Transition, countries were invited to submit national reports. In total, 21 country reports and two additional documents were submitted. The country reports give an insight into the national developments and current stae with regard to forests and forestry. They highlight the forest policy developments and related institutional changes in the transition process, future challenges to ensure sustainable forest management, the implementation of Resolution H3 of the Helsinki Ministerial Conference and areas of specific interest. This valuable information is collected in Volume II of the workshop proceedings. It is intended to serve as a complementary information to the presentations and working group outcomes published in Volume I, and inform about the various developments in the transition period and about lessons learned in CEECs. In addition, non-CEEC members of the UNECE/FAO Team of Specialists on Countries in Transition give their view on the transition process and contribute to a comprehensive picture of forest-related developments in Europe during recent years.
