The Fourth Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe was held from 28 to 30 April 2003, in Vienna, Austria. The decisions of this "Living Forest Summit" together with the chairman's summary of the multi-stakeholder dialogue, convened at the beginning of the Conference, will shape the further work on the protection and sustainable management of forests in Europe. The "Vienna Living Forest Summit Declaration: European Forests - Common Benefits, Shared Responsibilities" emphasises that co-ordination and partnership leading to shared responsibilities are crucial for the provision of common benefits from forests in the future.
