The book covers the trees and shrubs of the Sudan and includes Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. Within the latter, dicotyledons constitute the major part of the work. Exotic plants, now a common feature of the flora, are included and described after the endemic species. They are not always included in the keys. Hutchinson's families arrangement has been adopted. However, some families have been added and a few divided under new names. Genera and species are arranged alphabetically within their families. The text includes botanical descriptions, illustrations, keys and information on the habitat and distribution. All illustrations are Hamza's originals. They do not include scales but are of a very high calibre. Information on localities is from literature, herbarium specimens and field trips by Dr. Hamza throughout the Sudan.
