The red oak, Quercus borealis Michaux, is native in the east of North America and has been cultivated also in Europe, especially in Germany since the end of the last century. The examination of these experiments of cultivation on the basis of 114 only once made samble-areas and 15 oaks-comparison-areas in West Germany and Holland show that the increment of the red oak in the unmixed stand is characterized by a very quick increase in the youth and a strikingly strong decrease at the age of about 80. As up to now no other species of wood show a similar development of growth in Germany, this result needs a revision of the process of growth by long - dated observations of sample - areas. The red oak is best fit the cultivation of heaby timber. On an average the woods have attained their economic and also their biological maturity at the age of 100 years.
