The present volume seeks to bring up to date the complex subject of glasshouse pest control and also provides the first extensive treatment of the pest problems of the expanding mushroom industry. Considerable space is devoted to nematodes or eelworms which are incrasingly recognized as important primary pathogenes or associates with other plant disorders. The last two decades have seen a rapid increase in the number of available pesticides though their intensive use has brought its own problems. The most serious is the development of resistance in some mites, aphids and leaf-miners but the choice of pesticide in further limited by the phytotoxicity induced in many species and cultivars of plants under glass. The time ahs come to re-evaluate alternative non-chemical methods either to improve pest control or to lessen the pesticide selection pressures that lead to the evolution of resistant strains. Although protected environments present many unique pest problems, they also permit the exploitation of techniques which would be uneconomic elsewhere. These methods so limit pesticide usage that some pests, which have largely disappeared in recent years, may again assume importance. Therefore, many species, currently of minor importance but potentially a hazard, habe been included in the book. The volume provides current information on the biology and chemical control of the pests of protected crops and indicates the most important sources of biological information. While that chemical controls recommended are applicable only to the United Kingdom, the extensive biological data should be of interest to those concerned with glasshouse and mushroom culture anywhere in the world.
