This book has been prepared as an aid to teaching. It is produced primarily for undergraduate students in agriculture, forestry, geography and soil science taking pedology as a part of their training in soil science. Postgraduate students having advanced training in soil science, but specialising in a branch other than pedology, should also find it useful. It must be emphasised that this is not a treatise for the specialist pedologist. The intention is to present a modest level of information about the fundamental concepts in pedology, the factors of soil formation and the characteristic soils of the world, their relationships to each other as well as to their factors of formation. Any reader requring specific local knowledge is referred to the regional soil survey reports and memoirs.
