In the present edition, to prevent needles expansion, a "native" tree is defined as a single-stemmed perennial woody plant growting to a height of more than ten feet, and which is indigenous to Canada. Ornamental or "exotic" trees which are capable of growing in Canada may be mentioned within the text, but only in the context of a comparison or interesting phenomenon. The text is completely new and was written by the late Mr. R.C. Hosie, Forestry Consultant to the Department of the Environment. His detailed descriptions and selection of illustrations are the product of a lifetime spent teaching dendrology to university students, and are designed to assist all who wish to identify native trees. The Keys, included as Appendix "D", were designed by Mr. Hosie, and he gave valuable advice on general arrangement and photography.
