Pinus radiata appears to have been more widely planted outside its natural habitat than any other timber tree. Plantations of this species today cover about 2ʹ million acres (1 mill. hectares), mainly in New Zealand, Chile, Australia, Spain and South Africa. The object of the present study was to determine the most profitable planting espacement, thinning regime rates of interest, costs and timber values, and at the lity which can acutally be attained by investments in radiata plantations. To do this, it was first necessary to derive a number of equations whereby the stand development can be predicted for different treatments. These equations are described in Part One.
