In 1973 experimental surfaces were established in the Forest Management of Syke in northwest Germany with four- and five-year-old plants from 9 ranges of distribution of silver fir (Abies alba Miller). The paper is a report on their initial growth, frost damage, bifurcation, and height growth until the age of 14 and 15 years respectively. Generally, the different ranges of distribution have shown great variability of the investigated characteristics. Thueringer Wald and Lapus (Rumania) have shown good initial growth and frost resistance, low bifurcation and fair height growth. On the other hand, Bavarian Forest and Black Forest are not satisfactory according to the obtained so far. Other ranges of distribution, Poland, Jutland, Ostfriesland, Czechoslovakia and Calabria have been ranked with medium values.
