The useable water yield of forested watersheds within a site specific framework is greatly dependent on the anthropogenically influenced forest conditions. The evaluation criteria for the water yield are the amount, temporal distribution and the water quality of the runoff. The manyfold influences of the forest on hydrologic processes are also of tremendous importance for soil and avalanche control consideration. This also means that the increasing forest damage may result in singificant hydrologic and watershed management problems. In the Federal Republic of Germany the State of Hesse, where 41% of the area is covered with forests, is used as an example to demonstrate the magnitude of increasing area discharge and flood flow due to forest damages. It was attempted to estimate these consequences using the detected forest damage in the year of 1984 and also supposed forest conditions in the years of 1990 and 2000 /10,11,15/. In addition to the visible damage on the forest stands the continually increasing acidification of the forest floor is more and more endangering the water quality of forested watersheds. Recent investigation results of the Institute of Forest Hydrology show that this problem has already arisen inthe State of Hesse for the metals manganese, aluminium and zinc /14/.
