The main reason for organizing this workshop was to provide a forum to discuss the ways in which remote sensing and GIS techniques could provide tools for contributing to the regular collection of statistical and geo-referenced information on forest resources for the Pan-European area. To date, European-wide forest resource information has been obtained largely by combining the data collected for national forest inventories. As a result, the data are often difficult to compare from one country to another, due to the use different definitions, different methods of data collection and different counting units.
