Protection Efficiency and Regeneration Preconditions of Norway Spruce (Picea Abies (L.) KARST.) in the Upper Montane Mountain Forest of the Natural Forest Reserve Goldeck in Carinthia. Masterarbeit
Many mountain forests growing in the European Alps protect the site, sujacent infrastructure and settlements against the impacts of natural disasters as avalanches, rock fall, erosion or land slides (e.g. Brang 2001). The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW 2007) defines the primary function of 19.3% of the forested area in Austria as protection function. By increasing the roughness of the land, stabilising the ground through widely ramified root systems and the snow cover through natural hazards more than any other land cover or land use (Hamilton et al. 1997, van Steihn 1996).
