Abstract
Up-to-date and spatially distributed information on tree species isrequired in the context of forest inventories, forsustainable for estmanagmenent and biodiversity assessment(Whiteetal.,2016,Waseretal.,2017). So far many studies based on Sentinel-2(S2)imagery are confined to small areas, and comprehensive mapping approachesarer are(Waseretal.,2017). We map five different tree species and types based on two S2 tiles that cover avast part the State of Tyrol ,Austria. A recent study indicates that topography, especially castshadowed areas(Waseretal.,2018), influences classification accuracy. Moreover, structural stand characteristics, especially crown coverage, could indicate how much the spectral signal is affected by components of the understory, litter, soil and other background. Therefore it will be investigated, if structural attributes of stands such as crown coverage have a significant impacton mapping results.
