In Austria, the sulphur impact on forest ecosystems is monitored with foliage analysis of samples from the Austrian Bio-indicator Grid (Stefan & Fürst 1998, Fürst & Smidt & Herman 2003). This valuable tool was initiated with the aim to investigate the environmental situation of forests regarding sulphur impact and nutrition status (N, P, K, Ca, Mg; micronutrients Fe, Mn, Zn). In addition F, Cl, Pb, Cd, Hg as well as 137Cs and 90Sr are analysed in the proximity of pollution sources. The continuity and density of the network give evidence of temporal and spatial development of air quality and the environment pollution.
