This publication contains papers and discussion results from a workshop on afforestation of agricultural land, held in Brussels, December 1991 under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities. The first chapter presents reports on national afforestation programmes. In the second chapter, possibilities and limits of afforestation planning are outlined. The third chapter deals with economic and socio-economic aspects of afforestation. The proceedings conclude with results of the discussions during the workshop. The contributions describe the different developments in European countries. Examples are given of promising approaches to afforestation planning and the factors which facilitate successful afforestation are analyzed. The constraints posed, especially in densely populated areas, which threaten the realization of afforestation goals are also outlined.
