- AbstractThe aim of research for the project ŃThermal Power Plant žo tanj and Transboundary Air Pollution in the Years of 1987-2004ń was to determine the changes in oxidative stress on Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karsten) on the basis of the needle biochemical parameters in the area influenced by the sulphur emissions from the žo tanj Thermal Power Plant (žTPP) in Slovenia and in Austria (Styria and Carinthia). Within researches of stress on spruce trees total sulphur content were analysed in current and one year old needles of spruce trees. Ten different polluted sampling plots were selected in Slovenia: žo tanj, Topol ica, Gra ka gora, Zavodnje, Kramarica, Kope, Brne kosedlo, Laze, and Laj e. The similar investigations were done also at sampling plots in Styria and Carinthia in Austria (Klagenfurt, Völkermarkt, Wolfsberg, Deutschlandsberg, Feldbach, Leibnitz). Spruce trees from sampling plots in Austria were mainly arranged in third and second class according on the total sulphur content in spruce needles among the years 1987-1994, second class was appeared at the chosen sampling sites after the year 1995. In the emission area of žTPP third and fourth class were defined at sampling plots among the years 1987-1994, after that years we can observe decrease on the total sulphur content in spruce needles. None of the chosen locations were arranged in the forth class in the years 2003 and 2004. Since the year 1999 some of the chosen locations have been also classified in first class as regards on the total sulphur content. The results confirm decrease of sulphur content in spruce needles as in the area influenced by žTPP as also at chose sampling sites in Austria. The consequence of reduced SO2 emissions after installation of the desulphurization devices in the year 1995 and 2001 was a smaller annual mean ambient air concentration of SO2 and a corresponding by lower accumulation of sulphur in spruce needles.
