- AbstractBetween 1977 and 1991 more than 600 Norway spruce trees on 4 different sites (Picea abies L.) were artificially wounded on 2 opposite sides at 50 cm above ground level, by peeling off the bark of the stem (10 x 10cm). One wound was treated with wound dressing, the other kept untreated. The average duration of the experiment was 9.92 years with a maximum of 14 years. in 1993/94 109 trees were felled, and treated and untreated wounds were compared. 86.2% of the untreated and 34.6% of the wounds treated with a registered wound dressing had wound rots, caused mainly by Stereum sanguinolentum. The average spread rate of the wound rot was 4,4 cm/yr for the registered wound dressing.l 103.3 cm/yr for the untegistered wound dressing, and 15,5 cm/yr for untreated wounds.
