- AbstractSecondary forests form an integral part of the shifting-cultivation agricultural system in tropical rainforests. Although their importance is rising with increasing agricultural area, there is little knowledge about the way they are maintained. The present study was conducted in Alto Mayo, Peru, to investigae whether secondary forests of this region are at all used and whether their conditions depend on the ethnic groups involved. The study area is located on the left bank of the river Alto Mayo in San Martin department in north-eastern Peru, which is characterised by Tropical Pre-mountain Humid Forests. The area is inhabited by two ethnic groups. The first group is constituted of the communities of the native Indian population called "Aguaruna" who uses a traditional agricultural system including various crops. The second group includes settlers from the Andes, who have populated the area since the 1970s and whose agricultural system is mono-culture based on cultivating maize and dry rise. In the secondary forests on the territory of both groups, 43 sample plots each of an area of 314 m2 were selected at random and in-depth investigated. The age of secondary forests of the Aguarana varied between 6 and 25 years and was higher than that of the settlers (4 - 15 years). The results showd that the secondary forests are intensely used. The variability between the investigated stands was high. Each farmer uses his stands in a different way, according to his personal needs. However, there was a general clear distinction between the secondary forests of the native Indians and those of the settlers. The latter group could be classified into two subgroups according to the usage intensity of the stands. About a quarter of the settlers covered its needs by very intense usage. Idependent of the age of the secondary forests, tree and stand parameters particularly of stands in the area of the settlers showed deveopment which could only be expected for intensely used stands. The settlers felled the trees of the largest diameter while the Indians covered their needs using less vigorous trees. A significant difference was also indicated as far as the number and composition of species were concerned. The Natives use a higher number of species for various purposes like curing, nutrition, construction or as firewood, whereas among the settlers only the last two dominated. The results revealed that most of the species used by the local population are of no commercial importance. Investigations on forests in tropics may therefore lay emphasis on such species and on the needs of small-farmers in order to develop a sustainable management system for this kind of forests. A success of such systems may contribute towards reducing the loss of primary forest.
