- Abstract137Cs content of the microbial biomass in the organic layer of various forest ecosystems was calculated by subtracting 137Cs extracted from non- fumigated soils from 137Cs extracted from chloroform fumigated soils. It was shown that this method is not suitable for samples from the mineral soil. The values calculated for the organic layer of acid forest soils, in contrast, gave reasonable values and were in the same order as the 137 Cs concentration in fruit bodies of basidiomycetes sampled in the same area. 137Cs concentration of the active microbial biomass was 10-20 times greater than that of the rurrounding substratum. However, only 1-7.4% of total 137Cs was found within the living microflora. Litterbag experiments showed an active transport of 137Cs into the L layer. This process was accelerated by the mesofauna.
