- AbstractThis chapter gives a broad overview on advances in measuring SOC stocks and dynamics. Owing to its high relevance for scientists, land owners and policy makers, soil organic matter research has a long history in many parts of the globe. The focus of this research in the past has been on surface soils. However, in the past 2-3 dacades, more attention has been given to SOC stocks and dynamics within the soil profile. The complexity and diversity of soils has led to the development of a wide range of different methods and approaches to sample soils, to design experiments and monitoring schemes, calculate SOC stocks, fractionate SOC and investigate its dynamics through the soil profile.
