- AbstractMountain forests in developing countries have generally not been managed on a sustainable basis. More often, they have been and are being destroyed. That is a cause and consequence of the poverty and population pressure in the mountains. Related factors are the lack of appropriate policies and strategies which should ensure the involvement and compensation of mountain communities for their stewardship role of the sustainable management, conservation and development of mountain forest assets and related renewable resources. It is proposed to redress the situation and to adopt a holistic approach to the fragile moutain forest and a related resource which takes due note of the interdependencies of ecological, economic and social aspects. Also it is suggested that there is need for innovative approaches for investment in mountains, including the creation and valorisation of resources and their access to the market. This calls for appropriately trained human resources and the conduct of socio-economic and scientific studies which would provide data and mechanisms most appropriate for mountain assets management with due consideration of site specificities.
