- AbstractIt is concluded from pervious studies of natural beech (Fagus sylvatica) regeneration that primary growth factors such as light intensity, soil water content and nutrient supply should be quantified or manipulated in order to explain the causal effects behind seedling response to various treatments and site conditions. Silvicultural treatments, site characteristics and weed competition are complex and interacting factors influencing the regeneration through the effects of several interacting primary growth factors. The aim of the present study was to model the regeneration success from estimated primary growth factors like water, light and nutrients in order to improve the understanding of the causal effects behind silvicultural treatments and site. The hypothesis was the quantification of shelterwood density, contents of soil water and soil carbon and the shading caused by the forest floor flora would give sufficient estimates for light, water and nutrient conditions to generalize and predict regeneration success on a wide variety of sites.
