Isozyme analysis was made on ectomycorrhizal fungi of Pinus cembra, encompassing nineteen isolates of Suillus plorans, eleven isolates of S. placidus and two isolates of S. sibiricus. Furthermore, four unidentified strains isolated from mycorrhizal roots were included to this study. The banding patterns of ten enzymes (acid phosphatase, alanin aminopeptidase, aspartate aminotransferase, esterase, hexokinase, leucin aminopeptidase, malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucose isomerase, phosphoglucomutase) were diagnostic for each species. Recommendations of suitable enzymes to distinguish between these fungi are given. All strains isolated from mycorrhizal roots were classified as S. plorans. Isozyme analyses theoretically provide a way to identify mycorrhizal fungi in practical and ecological studies. The method may have field application for distinguishing isolates and mycorrhizae of their isozyme patterns are previously ascertained and are distinct from other indigenous organisms.
