A steel structure called « Snowcatcher » was built in Ranalt in the Stubai Valley (Tirol/Austria), to retard gravitational mass movements such as avalanches or debris flows. This structure consists of four steel frames with a mesh surface designed to protect areas against avalanches or debris flows. Several different sensors record the impact forces within the rigid frames and the tension forces on steel wire ropes that support the mesh surface. Here, the resulting forces from avalanches are compared to the resulting forces of a debris flow event.
