- AbstractOver the last decades, the mapping of forest functions has become an important tool for spatial planning and forest policy. In the field of regional planning, competing groups of land users express their own demands by formulation disciplinary development plans. These plans serve as a basis for mutual discussion and development of collective plans, being not much more than the lowest common denominator. In order to strengthen the power of basic documents, an internationally applicable method for mapping landscape functions is developed. Integrating the disciplines of forestry, agriculture, water management, and nature conservation, the main functions of the landscape elements forest and open land are evaluated and documented. These agreed subjects consider productivity, protection of resources and objects, biotope functions and recreational use. On the basis of common criteria and concerted indicators, the functions are evaluated according to public interest in specific sites. The results are displayed in general maps, across the boundaries of land use forms. They may serve as a basis for interdisciplinary discussions in the process of spatial planning, allowing fast forward finding of consensus in land use planning.
