Biomass development of Allium ursinum and soil solution chemistry were examined in 1989 and 1990 in an undisturbed mature beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stand in the Vienna Woods. Due tonutrient input after the decomposition of geophyte and favourable weather conditions nitrification occured at gigh rates and caused an increase of the nitrate concentration and a decrease of the soil solution pH of more then 1.5 units. Consequently nitrate contributed to high cation fluxes out of the rooting zone.
