Abstract
Biochar (BC) is the solid, carbonaceous residue the results from thermal decomposition of biomasse (pyrolysis). Pyrolysis leads to a unique combination of physical and chemical properties of BC that are currently investigated concerning the use of BC as soil amendement. Depending on feedstock and highest treatment temperature (HTT), biochar application may both directly contribute to the soil nutrient status by augmenting nutrients as well as inirectly by offering additional adsorption sited due to an invrease in surface area or alterations of cation exchange capacity (CEC) and funtional groups.
