Abstract
By means of historical and literary quotations from Greek mythology via Roman culture to modern times the author shows in the first part of the paper how the relationship between forest and water occupied man's mind during the ages, and how finally the desire developed to investigate this relationship scientifically. The second part consists of a detailed description of foundation and development of the water measurement stations in the Emmental.
