  • Abstract
Still today the Caspian forests on the north side of the Alburz mountains cover two million hectares. The sustainable (wise) use of 948 000 hectares forested land is based on economic plans. The remaining woodland area is protected by police regulation. It is the aim of the current management to maintain differently aged forests with a high mixture of tree-species by natural regeneration. The plant diversity of Caspian forests has to be emphasized and - corresponding to its low degradation - its genetical diversity. The very different geological and pedological specials of the Alburz mountains lead to a high diversity of ecosystems. That also guarantees a very high diversity of ecological processes. On the one had the Caspian forest is threatened on its area and on the other hand it is threatened on its biodiversity, such as destruction and overuse, woodland pasture, illegal use of wood, the cut of landscape, the declining of natural regeneration and degradation. Regarding this different scheme of destruction the popularity of natural forestry to protect the Caspian forests is growing.
