Abstract
Preferential flow may comprise > 20 % of infiltration. It gets only very pronounced at high and very low water contens and penetrate into loesses down to 1,0 to 1,5 m, into coarse sands and gravels down to 1,8 to more than 2,0 m below floor. Preferential flow produces in hilly areas interflow and gets quantified by means of environmental isotope methods. They may develop a significant transport potential for agrochemicals, thus producing economic losses for the farmers, contaminant impacts to surface waters during storm events and protects ground water to some extend.
