Abstract
In the Federal Republic of Germany, urban consumption of rural land due to urban development and related infrastructure constantly has been on a high level over the last years and averages nearly 130 ha per day at present. By law, compensations to restore the original ecological capacity are required if conversions of so-called undeveloped areas with negative impacts on the natural environment and landscape take place. Actual modifications in the laws for nature protection and urban land use planning will increase the requirement of compensation-areas. On the other hand these modifications allow for a more flexible placing and timing of compensatory operations. Thus generating opportunities for forest enterprises to general income for nature protection activities on forest land in the context of urban land use planning. Especially for regions with intensive agriculture and/or a high population density, the implementation of compensatory operations on forest land can be an alternative to conventional forest management. Furthermore, the compensation expense will be reduced with equal or even better results (improved efficiency).
